Life of Pi essay Outline

GET YOUR PARAGRAPHS WRITTEN AND POSTED BY THIS FRIDAY NIGHT- LATEST- FOR AN APPROPRAITE EDITING TIME

Alex- From now on guys lets add the more recent comments up here.

Alex- Also im thinking that journal for the second half has much more to analyze. We need to choose a topic so please post your ideas.

1. Analyze the heavy religious ties that are present with the ending of the book.

2. Moral obligations of Pi, Versus the Animals instincts. Often relates animals to religion such as Catholicism.

3.

4.

Alex W - Introduction and Conclusion

Journal Essay body paragraph ideas

Alex M - Religious ties at the end of the book.

Garrett B - How Religion keeps him alive and sane on the boat mention 3 religious leaders

Joel M - Religious ties to the animals, relating Pi's thoughts to how the animals think

Edward Z - Concession

1. Religion is of utmost importance to Pi. Discuss the role of religion in his life and how it helps him survive his ordeal.

2. Naming and names are significant in this novel—Pi’s own name is elaborately explained, and Richard Parker gets his name through a clerical error. How is naming relevant to the novel’s main themes?

3. In light of the fact that this is a novel about imagination, why does Martel begin with the Author’s Note, which gives the impression that Pi’s account is truth, not fiction?

4. One of the ways that Pi keeps himself sane and occupied while alone in the middle of the ocean is by writing in his journal. What does his journaling say about the human need for communication?

5. The two Japanese officials who interview Pi don’t believe that he really landed on a man-eating island. When they say that carnivorous trees and fish-eating algae do not exist, Pi responds, “Only because you’ve never seen them.” What does this exchange say about human understanding of what is real and possible?

6. Why does Pi give two accounts of his ordeal? Which is the true story, and which one would you rather believe?

Alex- Guys we have a short amount of time before our first journal is due. We need to decide on a topic for the journal please put your idead in the list below and we will select an idea and decide how to tackle the journal as a team.

  1. Discuss the deeper meaning of some of the quotes about life.
  2. Alex W- How about the role of religion in the novel (i.e the man at the begining says how the his story will make you believe in God)
  3. Why the author begins the story with a large introduction(100 pages) describing all of the characters and past experiences...
  4.
  5.
  6.
  7.
  8.
  9.
  10.

Edward: what kind style of journal are we going to do? I perfer an informal essay response.

Alex- We can decide that after we have chosen a topic. Put your ideas on the list and we will go from there

Alex - Alright so our group journal due date is quickly approaching and no one has contributed an idea. We need to choose out topic and journal style by at least tuesday. Also we need to discuss how the journal is going to be writtin part by part or as a group all at once.

Garrett - we need to get joel in here as well, but otherwise, we have 4 people in our group right?

Alex W- I'm in it too!

Edward- how far is everyone so far??? im on page 80-ish.

Garrett - Since we have 5 people in our group we can divide up the sections of the journal/essay like introduction and consession in one, the three body paragraphs as their own and a conclusion... We can decide who wants what paragraph after we decide on a topic!

Edwrd- the author talks a lot of stuff before the real story starts, how about we write the journal on why does he do this? there must be a reason he writes those things, foreshadowing or whatever?

Garrett - oh true, i agree ^^^ we could discuss why this is a good/bad way to introduce the characters or anything, but we basically need to read mroe to see if any of what he says is brought up later, if it has any meaning...

Alex- ok so we have our topic guys please make contributions to the essay outline page so we have our ideas colaberated to make a final product by next week

It's good to see you are focused on developing ideas for your journal. The easiest way to do this is to start discussing elements of the novel. Pose some questions and have others answer them or debate them. As a group, you should be much more active on the discussion page. Don't only rely on class time to do this.
